An Encounter with God: Cultivating His Presence

An Encounter with God: Cultivating His Presence

Opening Statement
The presence of God makes all the difference. Therefore, we must seek to cultivate the presence of God in our lives. Prayer must be a main focus if we are serious about cultivating the continual presence of God in our lives.

Psalm 1:1–3
Philippians 4:8-9

Point 1
Prayer is an intimate conversation with the Most High. In prayer, like meditation, we enter the presence of God. Let us not lose sight of this vital truth. The Almighty God of creation invites us to have intimate dialogue in prayer.

Isaiah 6:1–7

YHWH – “Yahweh”

“Adonai” – LORD

[Exodus 19:5] Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; [6] and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”

Point 2
Prayer is central to transformation. Meditation forms the heart. Prayer reveals the heart. So prayer reveals the content of my heart, allowing me to seek the transforming power of God.

This is the inevitable path of prayer, because we cannot continue in the presence of God and remain the same. At some point, as we continue to pray, we will want change and God will change us. We will want to think as he thinks, desire what he desires, and do what he does.

Watch your thoughts.
For they become words.

Watch your words.
For they become actions.

Watch your actions.
For they become habits.

Watch your habits.
For they become character.

Watch your character.
For it becomes your destiny.

Proverbs 4:23
Matthew 12:34
James 1:13–15
James 4:3

Point 3
Prayer is a learned behavior. Begin where you are. The more you pray, the more change you will see.

Remember:

  1. Prayer is an encounter with God.
  2. Listening is important.

Luke 11:1
